Typical student approach to assignments, leave it until the last minute and panic. Still it's not a very difficult one and as Richard K says read the tutorial and LCD data sheets, BTW do you mean 4 ports or 4 i/o lines ?.

If its 4 i/o lines then you have a problem as you'll need a minimum of 6 (4 for data, 2 for control, you can tie the R/W line low). Othewise you need some form of serial to parallel conversion (serial from the micro, to parallel on the LCD, I2C ?.
