it depends, which fastest time steps are needed for the Time Puls Units ?

E.g. on a standard 8051 at 12Mhz you can use a timer interrupt every 50µs to execute 12 DJNZ instructions.

Or on the DS89C420 at 33MHz you can get a minimal step width of about 5µs.
