You'll need some ac coupling as sunlight has a high IR content as does many other things- heaters etc. The 3pin thingys actually do quite a bit of work and will save you a bit of grief. I am told the Vishay ones are the best. I've used Sharp, but they can be a little finnicky with noise etc. |
