Hi! A few months ago I have had the problem similar to yours (length measuring with accuracy 1um). I have solved this the same way as wrote Erik, Andy and others. I have used integer number inside of uP but user has seen decimal places. There is no problem to convert this number from HEX to DEC and "vice versa". Good luck!
