The "OP" (does this stand for original post-guy?) it does isn't realizing too MANY pulses; he's realizing too FEW pulses - at least that's the way he describes it (which could be wrong).
In that case maybe he is actually reading 'a' getting double count which would correspond to half what he expect if the encoder is labelled per quqdrature result (I have seen both) however you are absolutely right, we are guessing wildly. I think we can agree on the following: Khojak: install an Agilent quadrature encoder and post the results. When, that is resolved, maybe, just maybe, there may be a way not to need it. However, till you have the results from PROVEN technology (you have too many variable: encoder, coupling, code, interconnect, ... ) to even attempt a diagnostic would be foolish.
