Jez,

1. There are at least two 8051 groups within Atmel - the original one and the ex-Temic one. It seems they don't cooperate nor coordinate their documentation.

And the best joke is, that (some of) the support for 8051s is provided by the Norway team - the makers of AVRs - which clearly doesn't cooperate with the '51 teams.

2. This appnote is related to the ex-Temic 'RD2's. This bootloader - as the whole chip - is heavily inspired by the Philip's 'RD2 (plus its past and future incarnations).

The main difference to the AVRs is, that the 'RD2s have the bootloader factory-programmed (and ROM-ish), and it presents the main (only) method of ISP for these chips.
