a diode with a red band

Most diodes have a band of some colour to indicate which end is the cathode

in series with the input. Is this what is called a suppression diode or tranzorb?

If it's in series then most likely it is just to protect against you reversing the supply polarity!

A "transzorb" would be in parallel with the input...
