The potential design here is a bridge type application where some PC style appendage hardware, with SensorPath devices in it, is being considered for reuse in a different application. I am trying to evaluate if there is a cost effective way to make a small microcontroller device which connects the SensorPath elements in the reused hardware to some other bus such as SMBus or I²C. A low pin count 8052 type device could easily do this. The tradeoff of course is to simply redesign the appendage devices to use I²C or SST bus devices themselves but there then is the loss of commonality, manufacturing two SKUs instead of one, and the need, in the I²C case, to add an additional active signal pin in the connector definition.
