You are right,I did not think of controling the contrast with the backlight leds. I mean the Vee Pin (Pin3) of the display modul which requires a DC voltage from 0V to arround +2V (in some rare cases even below 0V, depends on the used display drivers) Highest contrast of the display is given at the least voltage.
