If you search the www for <jones on stepping motors> you'll find a site built and maintained by a guy who's much better informed than most of us about the various techniques, quirks, and foibles associated with stepping motors.
Freescale sells parts with which some of these techniques can be applied. However, while I'd happily rely on a manufacturer's spec's with respect to the use of their devices, I seldom find these to be sufficiently complete, specifically with respect to the motor or even motor type in question, to allow their use as presented.
