That's probably nothing to do with physical distance, but rather to do with being on a different "segment" of the network.

What sort of WAN is it?

How are you connected?

Are you sure that all the bridges, routers, firewalls, etc, etc, are correctly configured?

I some times get a little garbage at the first of the packet returning.

What sort of "garbage"?

how are you viewing it?
