#141477 - percents

The "allowable" error depends on many factors, mostly not digital (like distortion on the cable, asymmetry introduced in the level convertors etc.) Slightly below 5% is the theoretical maximum, but the error rate with this would be unbearable. 3% works most of the time with "ideal" connection (short and good cable etc.). 1% should be well on the safe side. 0.16% is simply perfect :-)

Personally, I was using AT89C2051 against a PC in several hundreds of installations with 12MHz crystal and 4800 Bauds (TH1=-13, PCON.7 set), with no complaints (or, to be honest, with a several types of problems always on the PC side... :-( ). Of course, with serial (whether RS232, RS485 or anything else), a packetising/checksumming/retrying protocol is always a good idea.

PS. Doesn't the derivative you are using, have Timer2, by chance?
