Which all goes to show that there is no such thing as "easiest" or "simplest" or "best", etc...

  • Steve's answer requires least work in the 8051, but needs extra hardware (the MAX7221);
  • Jeroen answer requires least external hardware, but needs more work in the 8051.

    One thing's for sure:
    Or you could use 3 74ls47 display drivers.

    would not be the way to go unless you just happen to have a heap of 74LS47s just hanging around...
