what is the need of pullup resistor? There are millions of ways... The pull-up resistor is often needed, when an OPamp or comparator is used, which has an open-collector- or open-drain-output, like the LM339, for instance. Such schemes were often used in the past to provide a level shifting, when the OPamp or comparator was powered by a supply voltage differing from +5V.
