The MC6821 and MCS6520 both have bit-by-bit control over I/O direction. After looking through the datasheets it seems the 6255/6821/6520 are mostly all the same thing in terms of functionality. I suppose any one would be suitable. I had been looking at the 6522 as Jameco carries it for a reasonable price. I doubt you'll be willing to do that, even with the fastest available 68xx/65xx peripherals of that era. Yes, the I2C I/O expanders Russell mentioned seem like a superior solution. Cheap, fast, and plenty of I/O. |
