the size does not tell the whole story.
For instance Keil do not use a jmp @ for switch statements coded to allow that unless you optimize which is ridiculous. I am sure that SDCC has similar quirks. A true comparison should include run time This is NOT to critisize Tsuneos work, why would/should he spend an inordinate time on this comparison, I am sure that all his work is done using the same compiler.
