Yes, they are NECESSARY. I did, in earlier days, some times write a "quickie" without comments and lived to regret it. The comments are made to make YOU remember what YOU did when YOU get back after 2 years to update your code. They are also nice if someone else tries to figure out what you did, but do them for egotistical reasons, that way they get done.
