I don't quite understand: what's wrong with manually wiggling the P3.0 pin just to get further; and then set the timer's reload register with whatever value is appropriate for the simulator (and I guess most of them would ignore it altogether, accepting data from the simulated terminal at any baudrate)?

Of course if you can get away with cutting out the autobaud, the better.

Would you mind sharing your extensions?
