I also built the programmer from ATMEL's site however the software didn't work too well for me, only because of the parts I used in my power supply. I needed a longer time delay for the power supply to rise and fall between 5 and 12 volts.
This gave me a reason to write some software of my own(I hate to work in dos too) and it works. If you are interested in the software let me know.
