That's a good question, for which my answer after looking at the manual is "I'm not sure." It appears that it depends not only on the memory model being used, but also on whether the variable is declared within a function or not.

Another valid answer is "nobody cares", given that the compiler in question appeared shortly after the discovery of fire, when computers were still being fabricated from sticks and mud by creatures with narrowly-spaced eyes and low, sloping foreheads.
