Use a Hall effect sensor, which is inserted through the wall of a toroidal core, like Charles' CT Th eoutput of a hall sensor is of course a voltage proportional to current. CTs can be very scary, in larger sizes particularly. An open circuit CT will attempt to destroy itself !
