When moving slowly, the optodetector output signals have small slew rates, which means that the signals spend a lot of time near the switching threshold. Configuring the LM358 with positive feedback adds hysteresis, which cleans up the signals. See wikipedia for more info.
PS comparitors and opamps are designed differently and should not be used interchangeably. Search thousands of opamps in seconds with my opamp chooser |
