I think you may want to review the data sheet for your AT89C4051 closely. This part does in fact have a DPTR. Look at this block diagram as shown in the data sheet. The DPTR is there!! The SFR map also shows the individual DPH and DPL registers too.



What is not present is a valid usage model for the MOVX instruction since there is no on-board XRAM or external memory interface.
