As I understood the question, the OP wanted to know whether anything went on to the address or data bus when you accessed the DPH and DPL registers.

As far as I know, no 8051 or any variant does anything other than read /write the registers.

Of course an external memory access will be dependent on the value of DPTR. But nothing happens until the external addressed instruction is executed.
