Hmmmm
There are more "MAX 232" variants than could be counted in a week, these days. Check carefully that your schematic and component values exact match the used chip. Dont asume that vendor X chip is the same as vendor Y chip - even if the have the same partnumber. The original MAX 232 used four 10 µF caps if I remember correctly.
