#160928 - anomaly and its siblings Responding to: ???'s previous message |
I know this is an interesting way to describe the "bug list". It is however an accurate description if one looks at the English dictionary definition of the word:
anomaly - 7 dictionary results a⋅nom⋅a⋅ly [uh-nom-uh-lee] –noun, plural -lies. 1. a deviation from the common rule, type, arrangement, or form. 2. someone or something anomalous: With his quiet nature, he was an anomaly in his exuberant family. 3. an odd, peculiar, or strange condition, situation, quality, etc. 4. an incongruity or inconsistency. 5. Astronomy. a quantity measured in degrees, defining the position of an orbiting body with respect to the point at which it is nearest to or farthest from its primary. 6. Meteorology. the amount of deviation of a meteorological quantity from the accepted normal value of that quantity. 7. Grammar. irregularity. One could consider any of these other words as well: aberration abnormality departure deviation eccentricity exception incongruity inconsistency irregularity oddity peculiarity rarity unconformity unorthodoxy The oft used word in the industry for this is the errata list. This is usually also an accurate term as well but it is interesting to note that in the English dictionary definition for errata the main meaning for this is: a list of errors and their corrections inserted, usually on a separate page or slip of paper, in a book or other publication;. This leads to the interesting idea that when Analog Devices shows an "Anomaly List" they have the opportunity to show all issues whether or not there is a correction or work-around. On the other hand vendors that choose to use an "Errata List" may be making a conscience decision to only show those issues that have been dispatched with some type of resolution and those still in the mystery state stay undocumented. I believe I have experienced this latter state of affairs multiple times over my career. Michael Karas |
