I posted a bug report on the SDCC sourceforge site for the --funsigned-char bug, and Robert Larice promptly provided a patch (see the file far below on that page - don't use what is on the webpage, it's malformed by html-isation) which appears to work for me, but I didn't actually checked it on a real hardware.
