Back then at university - and it was not THAT far back in time (well... to be honest at least to myself, 15+ years :-( ) , I studied microelectronics (including technology, although never made real use of it), and we learned, that the bonding (contacting) pads on ICs are 100um x 100um in a roughly 150 um pitch, so that the 30-50um gold wire can be safely contacted by those ladies sitting behind the microscope.
