Perhaps you could put an adjustable square wave signal in to a PC computer serial port running hyperterminal or another serial program. The adjust the frequency and see when errors appear at what frequency or baud rate error.
Eg for 1200baud N,8, 1 use Sig Gen 600Hz (as a full period is 2 bits worth) Some square wave generators allow -/+ Vdd signals (for True RS232 levels etc) The pattern going in to the PC is 0101 0101 = 55 hex = ASCII char 'U' So you should see lots of 'U's on the screen then errors as the sig gen is adjusted.
