I might, however, have said that I thought that it was stupid for someone wanting to work to turn down a job paying as much as I generally did, just because he couldn't bring his cellphone into the workplace
I do not bring a cellphone into the workplace (I hate the things, I do not believe it is a right of the general public to interrupt/annoy me any time, anywhere).
HOWEVER, you are wrong in principle, much money does NOT compensate for an 'unpleasant' workplace.
