The 8052 has several optimisations for control related applications. It has the ability to read/write modify individual bits in its internal memory and its ports.

The '52 has several built in configurable counter/timers

The processing of logic operations was optimised.

The Register file and the Harvard architecture in the 8051 were the ancestors of many DSP chips. The register file performs many operations that you would have had to manipulate the Acc for.
