Unless he knows for certain that a faster completion of the conversion won't screw up things within the probably unknown firmware, that might be a problem.

I would probably buy the "real McCoy" in this case, provided he's telling the truth about simply wanting to acquire a replacement in order to effect repairs.

If he has access to the firmware that operates this circuit, he'll have little trouble with that aspect.
