If you are not 'locked into' a package, note that the newer LP52 is cheaper than the LP214. I need the smallest package possible. The LP52 looks like a full size 40/44-pin device. I know some of the SMD devices are smaller that the DIL-14 of the LP214, but I need to programme the things also. And with a 43*33mm board (with most of the space taken up by the PSU), there's no space for a programming header. I only switched from the AT89C2051 because there's no space for the 6 extra pins.
