My advice would be to go to industries/ factories/ companies etc in ur area. This is what we had done not too long ago :D

These don't have to specialize only in electronics. You can try firms that work in automotive, automation, robotics, instrumentation,controls or in process/ petroleum plants(I suppose many of them where u live :D) as there is a lot of scope in embedded systems in those and many other fields nowadays. If you think some company could use a 8051 somewhere, you could even develop your marketing skills to convince them to let you do a project for them ;D !! Trust me, most people like to see initiative in young guys, and will help if they can.

If you do an industrial project, funding and good experience are definite benefits, and you will also have the satisfaction of knowing that all your hard work is going to be put to use somewhere. But remember- if these companies do give you such a project, you will have to deliver a professional product with a minimum of guidance and a lot of hard work.

Nothing else is as exciting as that for a student, I believe :D... Such a project will count a lot in your future, be it a professional career or further studies.

And most importantly: Try to do something not done elsewhere. It doesn't have to be difficult... just different. That's how you will really develop your skills ;D
