Also, you could simply use a flag to update: meaning, every time there is a change in the minimum signifigant time (i.e., most clocks will be minutes, some are seconds), the flag is set; then each loop, it checks the flag. If it's on, it updates the display & clears the flag; if it's not, it skips the update.
