clear the LCD only once. remove the clear LCD instruction if it is there, from the loop. keep on overwriting the LCD data.
The flag idea is a good one suggested by Richard Slaughter. Alternatively, if the RTC is having some interrupt output, then use it to interrupt ur micro every second or minute as desired.
