It can happen. Manufacturer testing is pretty sophisticated today and makes occurance very unlikely. However every commercial product our shop lets out tests the resources it requires at power up that includes the memory prior to setting the stack, timers, and serial ports. This is because these devices are un-attended and expected to report failures as can.
