Thanks for that bit.. I'm picking up an oscilloscope to verify the crystal tonight... as for the reset, I believe it's clear (the chip won't program unless I press it)... as for EA.. well.. I'm not sure :)... I'll have to get the datasheets out again and find the pin to check for certain...

I'll definitely try that assembly bit and see what I can get... many thanks for the time! It can get difficult these days finding people who are willing to nudge a newbie in the right direction...
