You didn't mention what type extension your assembler saves the file in.

i.e. what <your_file.???>.

If it saves in binary format i.e <your_file.bin> then just use Intel's <BIN2HEX.EXE> utility to convert it into <your_file.hex>. You can download ben2hex and hex2bin files from either intel, or atmel.com sites.
