When I've had to use a PC, and didn't write my own PC program too, I used Hyperterm.

Have you checked that both ends of the serial line are set to the same baud rate and number of start/stop bits? Sounds like one end is using two stop bits... Most common setting I've run across is 9600 baud, one start bit, one stop bit and no parity, which matches nicely with the '51's uart mode 1.
