Using the chips mentioned above, the layout of the matrix is irrelevant; however, it makes bitmap creation easier if there is some logical sense to it such as (for a 16 row, 128 column sign) c0r0, c0r1 ... c0r14, c0r15, c1r0 ... c=column, r=row.
