I once saw a power supply, I am not sure what is that called but it was something like,

Direct rectification of mains 220.
a small oscillator circuit that converted 50 hz a.c. into high frequency a.c.

Then a very small transformer of 220 to 12 step down.

then normal bridge and cap. ...

Can somebody explain in appropriate terms
