Absolutely. You would be wasting your time with any embedded processor unless you understand every part of the low level architecture.

HLLs are a huge timesaver, and make for much more structure and maintainable code. But unless you can understand what they are doing (by inspecting the assembly listing) you will run into trouble very quickly.
