Rob, yes this is for a smartcard application. Specifically a passiveactive log device which I'm aiming to support all smartcards.

Erik, I can detect the baud rates just fine using auto-baud detection-like algos.

Andy, the hardware uart would produce too large of an error for most of the bauds. Customized bit-banging routines appear to be the only way to support all the bauds I would need.
