#25623 - Eric
I think it's pretty obvious from Jeff's posts that he has read a considerable amount of documentation. He cannot find or cannot remember where to find the information he is after. So, he asks the forum for an answer - and you refer him to 90 plus pages of documentation which has no contents or index. That just seems deliberately unhelpful. If you indicated which page in which document your answer would be useful.

There is a vast amount of literature and information related to the 8051 available on the internet - so much that it is sometimes very difficult to find what you want. If you are an expert in your field you can usually decide quickly whether a given document or section of a document is useful - if you are a novice (no offence Jeff) it is much more difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff.

So, I'll make my point again:

If you are not prepared to give a straightforward, helpful answer to a question then DON'T POST.

In the time it took you to give me the standard "Read the manual" line, you could have answered the question

Maybe I could; however once you get familiar with what info is where, it is a whole lot faster to look it up than to post and wait. as you see in Peters reply, there are many answers to your question, and the whole story (banks, bit addressable, regs) is explained in detail in the text.

A short ansswer "there are eight registers R0-R7" while correct, would not give you the insight into the register structure (complete with pictures which are not possible here) that the .pdf texts give you.

If you look through my responses, you will see that I am not against answering questions directly; however when the full and exact answer is available in a standard text, I prefer to direct the answer there.

Have fun,

Erik
