#27122 - RE: MACH FPGA ? |
Hi Steve,
I am just finishing validating my first design using a Lattice Mach4A3-256/128 with a Cygnal C8051F226. My experience has been so good, that I wouldn't use discrete glue logic again. Despite having worked out most of my design thru simulation in the Lattice tool, I had a couple of problems where I couldn't simulate (inputs which would ultimately come from my 8051 in response to outputs of the Mach4). Luckily, the ability to do a quick re-compile, and JTAG download meant no board redesign. The cost of the JTAG cable is either $65 or $125, depending on which version you buy. Lattice tech-support is very good when you deal directly with Lattice, and varies when dealing with manufacturer's reps. The Lattice tools are not necessarily free--they try to avoid dealing with hobbyists I think, and I eventually got a free set. The tools have a little bit of a learning curve if, like me, you havn't dealt with programmable logic before. They allow entry in schematic, ABEL, VHDL, etc... I used schematic entry because I was more comfortable with it--the only problem is that most tech 'gurus' don't use schematic entry anymore, so don't have quick answers in some cases. Overall though it's been a lot of fun. Good luck. Josh Morong |
