#27263 - RE: Any good tips on disassembly? |
Chris, since you mentioned you are using Pinnacle let me say that following Erik's steps is very easy in Pinnacle. As you probably have realized, Pinnacle will take its "best guess" at disassembling, but it can't automatically recognize data as opposed to code. There are two ways to go about this:
1. Do what Erik said. Look for text data and change those to "Data" with the "Data" button in the Code Disassembly window. That will cause Pinnacle to treat that bytes as data as opposed to instructions. You can also place labels at appropriate points--those labels will immediately be reflected throughout the rest of the disassembly. 2. If what you are disassembling can be run within the simulator and doesn't need to interact with external devices--or if that interaction can be temporarily circumvented--let the simulator run through your program. As the simulator runs, it can more accurately determine what is data and what are instructions. Normally it is best to do this step first, then clean up using the steps described in step #1 above. If you need help and are in the mood to outsorce, email me. I love disassembly work! Craig Steiner |
