I used this technique to "repair" the wire feed mechganisim on a MIG welder that I aquired. It was feeding the wire for a short time after the trigger was released making welding a pain. As the original control board was unavaliable (and I suspect stupidly expensive if it was), I added a relay to brake the motor. That was a few years ago, and it's still working fine.
