I can't offer any help with this one, but I was pleased to see that others know about the 405x chips (I've also used one for splitting a com line into 2. The host sends a code to switch the outputs).
As I wrote the program for this myself, I think I have an answer to my post of 2 minutes ago, concerning the Atmel AVR dev board!
