Michael,there nothing magic with ADC0804 to get into worked, presents no problem whether you read the data from any port of 8051 with or without pullups. I had been using port 0 without any pullups for ADC reading.Please check the control pins and also ref. voltages. I would recommend using ADC0801, pin compatible,gives better accuracy but a bit mucher price.
